This is an edited version of an hour long Google+ Hangout On Air Live Broadcast.

“…some are born celebrities, some achieve celebrity, and others have celebrity thrust upon them.” (Sorry, Shakespeare)

I had the pleasure of moderating a panel discussion this week on the subject of: Social Media Pros and Celebrities: Why You Need to Know the Difference.

The broadcast was hosted by Sherry Nourain of Captive Touch and the guests were: Jure Klepic, speaker, educator and change activist and Robert Caruso, social media professional and founder of Bundle Post.

The conversation reflected the participants; humourous, insightful and opinionated.

We discussed:

  • The difference between influence and popularity
  • How to determine true online influence
  • Pros and cons of using Influence scores
  • How to spot a real social media pro who can help you generate business results
  • What red flags to avoid when hiring a social media professional

On calling out the social media wizards behind the curtain: - “I know you are but what am I?”

Pulling Back The CurtainIn his blog post: Occupy, Tea Social Media Party: Robert writes:

“The social media revolution we are seeing can be described as; real social media professionals who are taking the message and stage back from the fake, celebrity, authors and speakers that the media elected …”

He is a contributing blogger to the new company: Steamfeed: “a resource for marketing, social media, and tech information by real professionals; not the so called ‘experts’, ‘gurus’,  ‘ninjas’ or ‘warriors’.

Robert is a man on a mission:

“Celebrity authors, speakers etc. haven’t actually taken a small company or medium brand and developed a strategy, executed a strategy and returned ROI.
What they are, are celebrities that have a name or are known for something else previously –  and that celebrity has given them a huge following. So they regurgitate and write stuff that we all already know except for the poor newbies coming into the industry.”

In his recent blog post, Social Media is Much More than Just Social and Media,  Jure wrote:

“… Many people that are passing themselves off as social media experts have not done in-depth analysis to develop understanding of social media – perhaps because they lack a cultural perspective – trying to fit old marketing theories into new communications mechanism without understanding symbolic & anthropological meanings….”

This is just a taste. Listen to the broadcast and let me know your opinion. I’ll be happy to share it with them.

These two celebrities, or should I say, professional social media revolutionaries are shooting with full arsenals!
