In this video, I discuss the difficulty some people have with change and some ways to help them get over through it.

One of the things I’ve learned from managing staff and clients is that they instinctively say no to change when first approached.

The key to having people accept and hopefully, embrace change is to consider the following:

Empathize

As the saying goes, walk a mile in their shoes. Get a sense of what a typical workday is like for the client before you consider advising that he start a blog with at three posts per week.

Communicate

Ever look at client’s eyes as you pontificate about the advantages of HootSuite over Tweetdeck or how Facebook’s EdgeRank works?

News Flash: Most people don’t have a clue or care about what we’re talking about.

Listen.

You need to find out what their business needs are before determining if those needs can be met with social media.

Participate

If your clients are already on social media, great!

If they aren’t and only want to be on social media because their competitors are, then you’ll have to educate before they can participate.

Perhaps start them off with Twitter. Have them open an account, search for competitors and interesting people to follow. Then have them just listen for a few weeks until they get a sense of how it works before they jump into the conversation.

There’s a point when it all clicks into place.

That’s when you reach into the bag of change and give them another coin.

Colour me change.

How do you ease people into change?
